Steven Spielberg announced that he will be taking a 30,000 mile trip around the world, complete with outdoor movies.The Cannes Festival has been in the news quite a bit lately, leading up to the beginning of the event in May. It was recently announced that “The Great Gatsby” would be opening the festival, and star Leonardo DiCaprio would be attending the premier. For the first time, Steven Spielberg will be overseeing the judges, after years of his shooting conflicting with the festival dates. Now, to perhaps to celebrate this role, Spielberg will be taking a trip around the world after the festival ends.
According to an article in Vibe, after the festival ends Spielberg will be traveling with his wife and some of his kids on his $200 million yacht, beginning in North Africa. His ship will be going to different places that have served as the inspiration or setting of his most famous films, starting with Africa’s “Indiana Jones.” He will be visiting Hawaii, where “Jurassic Park” was created and Shanghai, the filming location of “Empire of the Sun.” In all, the trip will be more than 30,000 miles, and is being called by his staff “Verneing” after the author of “Around the World in 80 Days.”
The boat Spielberg and his family will be using will “features a 3-D cinema screen, a spa, a helipad, two ‘spare’ motorboats and an infinity pool with a 15-foot glass wall that doubles as an outdoor cinema.”
While few people would be able to afford a million-dollar-yacht like the Spielberg family, this example does point out the flexibility outdoor movie screens have. While most event organizers use outdoor movies in parks or other similar locations, this example, as well as others, including Australia’s rooftop cinema, suggest other locations that outdoor movies can be shown.
