Summer Show Round Up: Traverse City Film Festival

by Bob Deutsch

Traverse City, Michigan has everything. It is the largest tart cherry producer in the United States and is listed as one of the 10 best places to retire in the U.S. by U.S. News. It has fresh-water beaches, ski resorts, sprawling gorgeous views of Lake Michigan and delightful wine produced by local vineyards. Among these attractions, one of the city’s most unique and celebrated events is the Traverse City Film Festival. Founded by the Oscar-winning film director Michael Moore in 2005, the Traverse City Film Festival shows a wide variety of cutting-edge and classic films.

DTA Global provided a world-class outdoor movie experience for the Open Space Outdoor Cinema at Traverse City. For several gorgeous nights, attendees sat in lawn chairs or on towels front of Outdoor Movies’ large inflatable screen in an open field to enjoy a premier cinematic experience. The excitement was palpable as moviegoers made themselves comfortable to view a lineup including critically acclaimed new releases as well as a few favorites of the past century.

This year we showed:

Our screening schedule also took  an unexpected twist: due a tornado in the area, our final movie screening of The LEGO Movie was cancelled. But there is a silver lining: a picture we took of the storm made it to story featured on CBS News!

Traverse City, MI Storm

Despite the massive storm and tornado, the Traverse City Film Festival was a great success. It brought over 100,000 admissions, 250 screenings of 123 feature films, and 121 shorts across 13 different venues. This year’s esteemed award winners included Visionary winner Robert Altman, Michigan Filmmaker honoree Roger Corman, and Lifetime Achievement award winner Geraldine Chaplin.
